It is no longer news that the election of principal officers of the 10th Assembly was one of the toughest in the recent times.
The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) had earlier ahead of the June 13, 2023 inauguration of the 10th Assembly recommended Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Jibrin Barau as the Senate President and deputy respectively. But, the party’s position did not go down well with the former Senate President Ahmad Lawan and Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari’s camp which off course showed in the build up to the election and the election proper. Though, at the end, the party’s position was maintained, but not without a high level politicking from Akpabio’s camp
However, the aftermath of the disagreement within the APC’s hierarchy before the national assembly principal officers’ election may currently be responsible with the animosity going on in the upper Chambers of the National Assembly.
The Animosity is so high that it’s now causing ripples on the floor of the Senate. This is so cruel to the fact that the Senate highly stick to it’s ‘Order Paper’ of the day as a result of too many “Point of Order” raised by senators probably to stall the proceedings of the day.
For instance, Tuesday July 25, 2023 the Senate were unable to usefully exhaust an item from the order paper no thank to the spurious point of orders by aggrieved senators and counters from their colleagues on the other side. It almost resulted to a physical combat if not by the grace of God.
The question begging for answer now is, Shall the Senate continue on this path of extinguished instead of distinguished,? Well, the two months annual recess of the federal lawmakers will definitely tell whether the aggrieved senators will let go their egos and settle for business of representation of their people and making laws that will enhance living conditions of Nigerians.
Anyway, Core Reporters would always be on ground to feed our readers with the latest from the Senate as it on fold.
