World Mental Health Day: Police Medical Director AIG Nkechi Urges Officers to Prioritise Mental Health
By Our Correspondent
Abuja (Core Reporters) – The Force Medical Director, Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Nkechi Eze, has urged personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to prioritise their mental health, seek regular medical attention and support colleagues facing psychological challenges.
Eze made the call in a message to commemorate the 2026 World Mental Health Day, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, extending goodwill to police personnel, their families and Nigerians.
She stressed the importance of listening to people with lived experiences of mental health conditions, noting that their voices, stories and perspectives should inform mental health policies, shape support services and improve community care.
According to her, creating an environment where people can speak openly about mental health challenges without fear of stigma or discrimination is essential to promoting psychological well-being.
The Force Medical Director also encouraged officers and men of the Force to undergo regular medical examinations and ensure their enrolment under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to facilitate access to healthcare services when needed.
She emphasised that mental health awareness and access to appropriate healthcare are important to building a healthier and more resilient police institution.
As part of the commemoration, Eze urged police personnel to listen with empathy, communicate with compassion and support one another in addressing mental health challenges.
She noted that fostering a culture of understanding and mutual support would contribute to a more mentally aware Police Force and a healthier society.
