The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally released the notice of election and the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections, in line with constitutional and legal requirements.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, (SAN) said the announcement marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s democratic process and reflects the Commission’s commitment to transparent, credible, and lawful elections.
Prof. Amupitan noted that the Commission acted pursuant to the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates INEC to publish the Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the appointed election date.
He explained that the tenure of the President, Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors (except in off-cycle states) will expire on 28 May 2027, while the National and State Assemblies will be dissolved on 8 June 2027, making it necessary to conduct elections within the constitutionally prescribed timeframe.
According to INEC’s timetable, “Presidential and National Assembly Elections: Saturday, 20 February 2027. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections: Saturday, 6 March 2027”
The Chairman disclosed that the detailed timetable has been uploaded to INEC’s official website and circulated to all registered political parties and relevant stakeholders. Resident Electoral Commissioners across the 36 states and the FCT have also been directed to publish the Notice in their constituencies.
Prof. Amupitan urged political parties to strictly comply with the timelines for party primaries, nomination submissions, and campaigns, warning that the Commission will enforce adherence to the law.
He also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to deepening the use of technology, strengthening voter register updates, enhancing security coordination, and expanding voter education ahead of the polls.
The Chairman reiterated INEC’s independence and called on political actors and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the electoral cycle.
“The success of the 2027 General Elections is a collective responsibility,” he said, assuring Nigerians that the commission is fully prepared to deliver elections that reflect the sovereign will of the people.
