For decades, Nigeria’s national electricity grid carried a reputation that inspired more anxiety than confidence.

Grid collapses frequently dominated headlines, while aging transmission infrastructure struggled under increasing pressure. Across homes, factories, and businesses, the phrase “national grid failure” became a familiar national lament.

Yet, quietly and largely outside public attention, a technological transformation has been unfolding within Nigeria’s power transmission backbone—one that industry observers believe is redefining the future of electricity delivery in Africa’s largest economy.

At the centre of this transformation is the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which, under the leadership of its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. (Dr.) Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, embarked on a comprehensive modernisation agenda. Although TCN has since been unbundled, with System Operations and Market Operations separated to form the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), many of the reforms currently being advanced originated during this period.

What is emerging is not merely an infrastructure upgrade but a deliberate effort to digitise, modernise, and stabilise Nigeria’s fragile transmission network through technology-driven reforms, enhanced data visibility, and strategic capacity expansion.

Inside the National Control Centre (NCC), engineers oversee the intricate network of substations, transmission lines, and electricity flows across the country. Years ago, this monitoring relied heavily on outdated systems inherited from the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), offering limited visibility and often delaying operational responses during critical incidents.

Today, however, the picture is changing. Under Abdulaziz’s leadership, TCN initiated an ambitious digital transformation programme aimed at modernising grid operations and improving real-time system management—an initiative now inherited and being advanced by NISO.

One of the company’s most significant interventions was the deployment of an in-house Internet of Things (IoT)-based solution developed by TCN engineers to enhance grid visibility nationwide.

The innovation enabled near real-time acquisition of operational data from power generation stations and transmission substations across the country, significantly improving the ability of Grid Controllers at the NCC to monitor system performance and respond more effectively to emerging challenges.

For the first time, generating stations and a substantial number of transmission substations became digitally visible to operators in near real time—a development industry experts describe as a major institutional milestone for a transmission network that historically struggled with fragmented monitoring systems.

The transformation extends beyond software and digital dashboards. Through the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion and Rehabilitation Programme (NEGMERP), TCN embarked on extensive infrastructure upgrades across the country.

Aging transmission lines have been reconductored, obsolete transformers replaced with higher-capacity units, new substations constructed, and existing facilities upgraded to improve operational efficiency and network resilience.

The results are becoming increasingly evident. Nigeria recorded several generation milestones under the current management, including an all-time peak generation of 5,802 megawatts.

Even more remarkable was the stability achieved on the national grid, which operated for 421 consecutive days—from July 20, 2022, to September 13, 2023—without experiencing a system collapse, an accomplishment many industry stakeholders once considered improbable.

Another major component of the ongoing digital transition is the deployment of a modern Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS). Initiated by TCN and now being continued by NISO, the project is designed to replace aging infrastructure inherited from the NEPA era with a modern automated control and communication platform capable of supporting advanced grid management.

While awaiting full implementation of the SCADA/EMS project, TCN simultaneously pursued smaller-scale digital solutions capable of delivering immediate operational benefits. This dual-track strategy—combining long-term modernisation with practical short-term innovations—has become one of the defining features of the organisation’s reform agenda.

As these reforms mature and become fully integrated into grid operations, their impact is expected to become increasingly visible. A more digitally managed transmission network promises greater efficiency, improved reliability, enhanced stability, and more predictable bulk power delivery.

For a country whose economic growth depends heavily on a stable electricity supply, the ongoing technological transformation of the national grid may ultimately prove to be one of the most consequential reforms in Nigeria’s power sector history.
