As well-meaning Nigerians, mostly basketball stakeholders and fans of the game are busy looking for a way out of the crisis that has bedevilled the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) which has resulted in factional elections that have produced two Presidents, the minister of sports and youths development, Sunday Dare is still dreaming of his inability to nib the bud from the onset.
The sports ministry under the instruction of the unrepentant minister instead of calling the spade what it is issued a press statement on Wednesday claiming that it was aware of the recent developments around the elective congresses of the NBBF in Abuja and Benin respectively.
However, the ministry claimed in a statement issued by the Director of Press, Manga Mohammed on Wednesday that it was awaiting the report of the congresses before it will make its position known to all stakeholders.
According to the statement, “The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development is aware of the recent developments around the Elective Congresses of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) in Benin City and Abuja on Monday, January 31st, 2022.
“The Ministry awaits the reports of the Congresses upon which it will make its position known,” the statement said.
It will be recalled that the NBBF elections could not take place on September 30, 2021, when other federations held their elections due to the crisis that erupted prior to the date, a situation that prompted the ministry to take over the activities of the NBBF pending when the election would be conducted.
After the sports minister, Dare constituted a reconciliatory committee to broker peace among basketball stakeholders, the reports of the ministry is yet to be made public and in spite of the crisis, the minister ordered for NBBF election of January 31, 2022, in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the election took place in Abuja as directed by the ministry and Igoche Mark emerged as the President with his other executive members, but New National Star can authoritatively report that the former President of the NBBF Musa Kida against the directives of the ministry led his cohort to Benin for a factional election and the ministry is now claiming that it is waiting for the two congresses reports to make it position known to the public.
