Senator Mohammed Sani Musa has called on the Federal Government to redirect its security strategies if it must get it right in the fight against insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and so on.
The Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District on Tuesday in plenary cites Order 42 and 52 to seek the leave of the Senate to present a motion on the activities of bandits and Boko Haram terrorists in Shiroro and Rafi Local Government Areas of Niger State which has taken a dangerous dimension.
The motion, however, gathered overwhelming support from other Senators seeking urgent intervention from the Federal Government to take drastic actions to bring to an end the act of banditry, kidnappings, and all sorts of insecurity currently ravaging the country especially in some communities in Niger State.
Musa who was pained by the recent onslaught of the insurgency activities in his senatorial district in Niger State said, Nigeria cannot continue this way, stressing that the government must do everything possible to keep protecting the lives of its citizens as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended.
He said, because the government is not living to its responsibility of providing for its citizens and shelter them, the criminal elements are exploring that by their recruitment and continuous attack on Nigerians.
Musa insisted that the criminals are recruiting those less privileged in the society into their folds that is why it is becoming more difficult in the fight against them, but he said the only way out is for the govt to redirect the security strategies, make arms available to security and boast their morals in order to get the job done and liberate the country from the grip of the criminal elements.
On whether the government should give bandits amnesty, Musa said ‘NO’, adding that amnesty is giving to people who are fighting just causes and not criminals whose target is to kill, maim and destroy.
He noted that Niger Delta agitators agitated for a just cause and they were not killing their people and when the opportunity for amnesty came they embrace it and it was done, “so what are they criminals killing our people on daily basis agitating for?”
“These people that are killing our people, destroying their properties even in the holy month where Muslims faithful are reflecting, which amnesty do they want, nobody will give such criminals amnesty because they are enemies of the state and so they shall be seen and treated.”
“In all these, we must all think alike together for the solution this is no time to apportion blames to anybody or group of persons because the monster is steering on all of us; irrespective of religion, tribe and ethnicity,” he said.
