Police Insist No Officer’s Above the Law as AIG Jimoh Faces Probe Over VDM Claims
By Our Reporter
Abuja (Core Reporters) The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, AIG Moshood Jimoh, has been invited for questioning over allegations made by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), while also inviting the activist to provide evidence to support his claims.
The Force, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the criminal case referenced by VDM had already been investigated and was before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
According to the police, because the matter is now sub judice, its determination rests with the judiciary, stressing that it would not conduct a media trial or allow public campaigns to influence judicial proceedings.
The statement disclosed that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), invited AIG Jimoh as part of the Force’s internal accountability process.
It also revealed that on July 30, 2026, the FCID formally invited VeryDarkMan to appear at its Abuja headquarters to substantiate the allegations he made publicly.
The police said the actions demonstrate its commitment to investigating credible allegations of misconduct against any officer, irrespective of rank, through established channels including the FCID, the Complaint Response Unit and, where necessary, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police.
While affirming Nigerians’ constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability, the Force cautioned that such rights do not extend to defamation or the use of unsubstantiated allegations to pressure the institution into disciplinary action outside due process.
It maintained that any officer found culpable after investigation would be sanctioned in accordance with the law, adding that where allegations are proven to be false and malicious, the Force reserves the right to seek appropriate legal remedies.
The Nigeria Police Force urged VeryDarkMan to honour the invitation by the FCID and cooperate with the ongoing administrative review while allowing the judicial process in the criminal matter to proceed without interference.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, accountability and the impartial administration of justice, insisting that no officer is above the law and no genuine complaint would be ignored.
