Opposition Parties Move to Unseat APC, Plans Single Candidate for 2027

By Kevin Stella Kita

Opposition political parties in Nigeria have jointly resolved to resist what they described as attempts by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose a one-party state, declaring their intention to present a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The resolution was contained in the Ibadan Declaration, a communiqué issued at the end of a National Summit of Opposition Political Parties held on Saturday, April 25, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The parties accused the APC of undermining democratic principles and vowed to defend multi-party democracy in Nigeria.

“We shall firmly resist all attempts to foist a one-party state on Nigeria and will continue to defend and strengthen democratic plurality,” the communiqué stated.

The opposition also rejected alleged moves to impose Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate in 2027, insisting that they would field candidates and actively contest all elections.

In a significant move, the parties announced plans to work towards presenting a single consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, aimed at consolidating opposition strength.

On electoral matters, the summit called for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, accusing him of bias in favour of the ruling party and warning that his continued stay in office could undermine public confidence and trigger instability.

The parties also urged the National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Act 2026, particularly provisions they believe threaten the integrity of the electoral process.

They further demanded the immediate release of political actors allegedly detained or harassed on bailable offences, stressing the need to protect fundamental rights and ensure inclusive political participation.

Criticising recent INEC guidelines, the opposition described them as restrictive and skewed against opposition parties, calling for an extension of the deadline for party primaries until the end of July 2026.

The summit commended Nigerians for their resilience and democratic commitment, urging continued support in what they described as a collective effort to “rescue the nation from state capture.”

The parties also expressed appreciation to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and the people of the state for hosting the summit.

The communiqué was signed by chairmen of participating opposition parties.
