The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said that rights to life in Nigeria is threatening, as it revealed that 298 persons will kill in the month of May with 27 law enforcement agents and members of the Armed Forces. A situation the executive secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu (SAN) said is warrisom
Ojukwu noted that though law enforcement agents are the worse culprits of human rights violations, added that does not in anyway warrant the recent attacks and killings on them, while stressing that if this strange occurrence is not curtail with immediate effects it will spell dooms in the nation.
Meanwhile, NHRC ES said, the month of May has recorded the all time low cases of child abandonment, a situation he said was good omen.
However, Niger, Katsina state and the FCT topped the states with kidnapping in the month under review.
Notwithstanding, the Commission noted that human rights complaints to the commission has continue to rise astronomically, as he said mass killings and adduction were at the highest level this year. Also, varrest and prolonged detention of journalists.
“The dashboard stands as a testament to our commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights in Nigeria.Over the past months, our teams in Abuja and across the 36 states have worked tirelessly to compile and analyse data from complaints received at the Commission and unreported human rights violations monitored across the country.
“These analyses not only shed light on the state of human rights in our nation, but also serves as a record of our progress and a guide for future action. This month’s edition features 55,218 complaints received by the Commission with violations against state actors topping the chart.
“The violations recorded in the month of May impacted on an estimated 157,368 persons across the country based on our Victim Impact Analysis. This is a distressing indication that despite our efforts, there are still instances where those entrusted with upholding the law become violators of human rights.
“We must emphasize the importance of accountability and the reasonable use of force by law enforcement agencies. While it is essential to maintain law and order, it must be done in a manner that respects the dignity and rights of every individual. Any abuse of power or excessive force must be met with swift and impartial justice,” he said
