The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Cuba have taken a significant step towards strengthening their bilateral relations by signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to enhance diplomatic ties, deepen cooperation, and foster greater collaboration between the two nations.

The MoU signed on Monday March 17, 2025 was carried out by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla. It was a culmination of discussions between the two ministers, who acknowledged the historical and cultural connections between Nigeria and Cuba.

These connections date back to the pre-colonial era, with shared cultural influences from the Yoruba and Itsekiri ethnic groups remaining prominent in Cuba’s traditions, music, and religious practices ¹. Cuba’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, reaffirmed Cuba’s strong bond with Africa, especially Nigeria, and acknowledged the African heritage in Cuban society.8

This MoU signing is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between Nigeria and Cuba.

Nigeria and Cuba are working to advance their diplomatic relations, especially in areas of trade and commerce.

Recall that Nigeria and Cuba signed an MoU in 2023 to promote food security and agriculture advancement. Meanwhile, the two countries are also exploring opportunities for cooperation in healthcare and cultural exchange.

The partnership between Nigeria and Cuba is built on a foundation of shared history, culture, and values. As both nations continue to work together, we can expect to see significant advancements in various sectors, ultimately benefiting the people of both countries.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar in his remarks said, “Cuba played a significant role in the liberation of African nations from colonial rule and apartheid regimes, much like Nigeria did during the struggle for independence across the continent.”

While his counterpart in Cuba Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla reaffirmed Cuba’s strong bond with Africa, and Nigeria in particular, while acknowledging African heritage in Cuban society, emphasizing that the country takes pride in its African roots.

“When you say Cuba, you are also saying Africa,” Rodríguez said. “We recognize the immense contribution of African descendants to Cuba’s independence, economic development, and cultural identity.”
