The traffic jam along Nyanya-Mararaba-Keffi Road left motorists stranded on Saturday leading to Sunday morning as drivers and passengers travelling to various states were forced to pass the night at the gridlock.
Nyanya-Mararaba-Keffi Road is a major road that connects North Central and North East to Abuja.
Mr James Odey who was traveling from Jos to Abuja on Saturday explained that it took him about four hours to drive from Masaka to New Nyanya pedestrian bridge, near Karu Divisional Police Station in Nasarawa State. A distance that is ordinarily covered between three to five minutes of driving. He noted that he arrived Masaka at about 1.30pm and got to New Nyanya at about 6pm. However, he was forced to park after his car was hit three times by other vehicles as drivers tried hard to get out of the traffic jam without success.
Most of the motorists who spoke with Npress news said they were held up from Sarurday till Sunday morning.
Our correspondent also observed that as at 5am on Sunday morning some of the ‘area boys’ who turned themselves to ‘good Samaritans’ were seen controlling the traffic at various junctions in Mararaba and Nyanya as drivers were driving from opposite directions on the same lane. It was discovered that though there were some few officials of Federal Road Safety Corps, (FRSC) and other security operatives in the place on Saturday, but they left when they could not help the situation. No presence of FRSC officials and security agents was noticed as of 5am in the affected areas on Sunday morning around 5am making the ‘areas boys’ to take over the control of traffic.
Some of the Road users attributed the cause of the gridlock to activities of construction company who closed the road at Ado, area of Karu LG of Nasarawa without alternative route.
Npress news understand that the lack of by-pass road from Nasarawa state to Abuja is a major factor causing this type of gridlock.
