Twelve persons, including students, were crushed to death when a trailer conveying sharp sand lost control in Mpape junction, a settlement around the Maitama district of Abuja.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred  Thursday evening before the Keke Park along the road that leads to Mpape junction.

A witness, Saleh Jibrin said the truck rammed into three tricycles and two other vehicles, killing at least 12 people.

Saleh said the driver, having seen the havoc he had caused, abandoned the truck and ran away with the help of a motorcycle.

“When the incident happened, I was close to the road. It was very damaging. It killed more than 10 people as I counted. Some persons we spoke with attributed the accident to brake failure and in the process crushed the tricycles with passengers on board including others.

” To me, what caused the incident at first was that one of the truck’s tires burst, which made it lose control,” he said.
