Registrars of Nigeria Universities have been called upon to entrench academic cultures and tradition to consolidate the successes recorded in their various institutions that can open new frontiers to nurture a 21st century university that produces graduates who are globally competitive.
The vice Chancellor , Nasarawa State University,professor Suleiman Bala Mohammed gave the charge on Thursday while declaring the 17th retreat of Association of Registrar’s of Nigerian Universities (ARNU) in the assembly Hall of the Nasarawa State University Keffi, in Keffi LGA of the state.
With the Theme: Administering Nigerian Universities of the future , Expectations and Drawbacks,professor Suleiman averred that the choice of the theme was apt , especially in consideration of the recent strike action , which is one of the drawbacks in the collective efforts to improving the university system.
Also speaking, the Chancellor of the Nasarawa State University,who is also the paramount ruler of Keffi emirate council, Alh ,Dr, Shehu Chindo Yamusa111, said the themes and sub-themes for the retreat ate towards improving and addressing the identified setbacks envisaged in the registry.
The Emir ,however called on the various vice chancellor’s in Nigerian Universities to see their registrars as partners in progress and not otherwise.
He said,” It is very worrisome to say that there are some few Universities without established acrimony between registrars and their vice chancellors.
” Such ugly differences have affected quality assurance,vision and mission of the universities.I appeal to you to create a bilateral consultancy relationship with traditional institutions to help them perform the registry assigned task,since modern administration and Marx Weber bureaucracy theories raws it’s inspiration from traditional administrative system” The Emir said.
He added that there should be ground breaking research in the area of politics and general administration
Earlier the Chairman , Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities,Dr . Abubakar Mamuda , while thanking the about 100 participating registrars,said the 17th annual retreat and 72nd Business meeting of ARNU was aim at bringing all registrars of Nigerian Universities together on a platform that promotes ethical and best practice in administration of Nigerian Universities and the educational system in the country.
Dr Mamuda added that the theme was carefully chosen ,taking cognizance of the present realities of Nigerian Universities system and emerging global trends, saying the traditional objectives of University,which is teaching , research and community service is fast giving way to new goals of research and innovations.
