NBBF Election Crisis Deepens as Delegate Dispute, Corruption Allegations Trail Musa Kida’s Exit

Abuja (Core Reporters) – Fresh controversy is brewing in Nigerian basketball as the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) heads towards its elective congress in Yola, Adamawa State, with stakeholders raising concerns over alleged manipulation of the delegates’ list, attempts to influence the succession process and corruption allegations hanging over the outgoing federation president, Engr. Musa Kida.

The development is threatening to reopen old wounds in Nigerian basketball, where leadership contests have historically been accompanied by bitter disagreements over representation, electoral procedures and control of the federation.

Multiple stakeholders, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the unfolding developments, alleged that the composition of delegates for the Yola Congress is being altered in ways that could favour a preferred candidate for the NBBF presidency.

According to the stakeholders, some individuals and institutions that had previously secured their mandates to participate in the congress are allegedly being replaced or removed, raising questions over the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.

One stakeholder alleged that the leadership under Kida was working to ensure the emergence of a preferred successor believed to be a Director-General of a Federal Government agency.

“The leadership of the NBBF under Engr. Musa Kida is already blocking stakeholders who may go against his planned successor as the next NBBF supremo,” the source alleged.

Another source claimed that the alleged preferred candidate had approached a Governor elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was subsequently said to have contacted other APC Governors over the composition of basketball delegates from their respective states.

“Those who are supposed to attend the NBBF Congress are being changed overnight. The plan is to install a successor who is a DG in a federal agency,” the source alleged.

The source further claimed that the alleged manoeuvring had received the tacit backing of a senior official of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

However, the claims could not be independently verified as of press time.

Corruption allegations trail outgoing leadership

Beyond the delegate controversy, the impending election is also taking place against the backdrop of allegations of financial impropriety and corruption levelled against the outgoing NBBF leadership.

Stakeholders have raised questions over the management of federation finances, sponsorship resources and other funds during Kida’s tenure, insisting that the leadership transition should not become an avenue for sweeping unresolved allegations under the carpet.

The allegations, however, remain claims and have not been established against Kida by a competent court or other duly constituted investigative authority.

Some stakeholders are therefore demanding greater transparency over the federation’s financial records and the handling of funds throughout the outgoing administration, arguing that whoever emerges from the Yola congress should be prepared to account for the federation’s financial stewardship.

They also want any credible petitions or complaints concerning the administration of the federation to be subjected to appropriate investigation rather than being treated as political ammunition in the election.

Fear of another leadership crisis

The latest development has triggered fears that Nigerian basketball could once again become embroiled in a prolonged leadership crisis if the Yola congress is perceived by a significant section of stakeholders as lacking credibility.

Basketball stakeholders argue that the sport has already paid a heavy price for years of internal disagreements, with disputes over leadership often overshadowing issues concerning player development, grassroots basketball, domestic competitions, funding and Nigeria’s international representation.

They insist that the next NBBF administration must emerge through a process in which eligible stakeholders are allowed to participate without intimidation, inducement or political interference.

“Basketball has suffered enough crises and we cannot afford another one,” one stakeholder said.

The controversy has also revived concerns about the growing influence of political connections and financial muscle in sports administration.

Some stakeholders maintain that the leadership of the NBBF should be determined primarily by those with verifiable contributions to the development of basketball rather than by political influence or access to government officials.

They argue that the history of Nigerian basketball was built over several decades by players, coaches, club owners, administrators, state associations and other stakeholders who sustained the sport through difficult periods.

Yola congress under scrutiny

With the Yola elective congress approaching, attention is now focused on the final delegates’ list, the procedures being adopted for accreditation and the safeguards that will be put in place to guarantee a transparent election.

Stakeholders are calling for the federation and relevant sports authorities to publish and clarify the criteria used in determining eligible delegates, while urging all parties to respect the constitution and electoral regulations governing the NBBF.

They also want the electoral process subjected to sufficient scrutiny to prevent disputes that could subsequently spill into litigation or another prolonged leadership crisis.

Efforts to obtain the reaction of the NBBF leadership to the allegations concerning delegate substitutions, the alleged succession plan and the corruption claims against the outgoing administration were unsuccessful as of press time.

The Yola congress is expected to determine the next leadership of Nigerian basketball and could prove decisive in determining whether the federation enters a new phase of reconciliation or is plunged into another cycle of internal conflict.

For stakeholders, the immediate demand is straightforward: that the election be conducted transparently, that every legitimate delegate be allowed to participate, and that allegations concerning the outgoing administration be subjected to appropriate scrutiny rather than allowed to become another source of division within Nigerian basketball.

Lsst-line :The Sports sector reform currently going on in the football federation which has prompted the resignation of the entire board members led by Ibrahim Gusua, should also be applicable in the NBBF if the leadership of the Narional Sports Commission (NSC) is truely interpreting the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with sincerity and not for personal gains.
