Nigeria Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies as a critical requirement for safeguarding national security, promoting public trust, and advancing nation-building efforts.
Speaking at the National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister said the media and security institutions share a common responsibility of protecting the national interest, promoting peace, unity, and development.
According to the Minister, effective collaboration built on professionalism, trust, and mutual respect is essential in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, cybercrime, misinformation, and other emerging threats.
He highlighted the Tinubu Administration’s ongoing investments in security operations, intelligence infrastructure, surveillance technologies, and personnel capacity building, noting that significant successes have been recorded in the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country.
Idris stressed that responsible journalism remains vital in an era of widespread misinformation and disinformation, urging journalists to uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and ethical reporting while encouraging security agencies to maintain transparent and timely communication with the media.
The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to promoting constructive engagement between the media and security institutions through dialogue, strategic communication, and public enlightenment initiatives.
He commended the NUJ and DSS for organising the summit and expressed confidence that its recommendations would strengthen cooperation between the media and security agencies in support of national security and sustainable development.
