The Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Thursday hosted the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Krzysztof Gawkowski, alongside Ambassador Michal Cygan and members of the Polish delegation at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, as both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and institutional cooperation.
Welcoming the delegation, the Minister described the visit as a major step toward deepening relations between Nigeria and Poland, noting that the engagement signals the beginning of a stronger and more strategic partnership between both nations.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to collaboration, mutual learning, and shared development, stating that both countries possess unique strengths that can be leveraged to tackle common challenges and unlock new opportunities.
“This visit is not just another diplomatic meeting,” the Minister said. “It is about laying the foundation for a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship between Nigeria and Poland.”
Discussions during the meeting centered on expanding cooperation in critical areas such as border management, internal security systems, technology transfer, cybersecurity, innovation, and institutional capacity development. The Minister expressed Nigeria’s interest in drawing from Poland’s expertise while exploring technical partnerships and investment opportunities.
The Minister also acknowledged ongoing diplomatic engagements and welcomed plans for an official visit to Poland in the near future, which is expected to facilitate further discussions with Polish government institutions and private sector stakeholders in the security and internal affairs sectors.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness for international investments and strategic partnerships, Tunji-Ojo highlighted recent economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government, including exchange rate unification, inflation control measures, and the removal of fuel subsidies, aimed at repositioning the economy and boosting investor confidence.
“We look forward to formalising our cooperation through official agreements and building practical solutions that will benefit both countries,” he added.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Gawkowski expressed appreciation for the warm reception and praised the growing momentum in Polish-Nigerian relations. He described Nigeria as a country with significant economic, demographic, and technological potential, identifying it as a strategic partner for long-term cooperation.
According to him, Poland is prepared to contribute through its expertise in innovation, digitalisation, infrastructure development, and advanced technologies.
Gawkowski also extended a formal invitation to the Nigerian Interior Minister to visit Poland, expressing optimism that sustained engagement would create new opportunities for collaboration between public institutions and private sector stakeholders in both countries.
He further acknowledged ongoing improvements in Nigeria’s internal security architecture, noting that the sector presents strong prospects for future bilateral cooperation.
The meeting marks another important milestone in strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Nigeria and Poland, reflecting the shared commitment of both nations to building a productive and enduring partnership.
