Tinubu Reaffirms Strong Nigeria–UK Ties at Windsor Castle, Says Friendship Will Grow

Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed that the relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to deepen, describing the bond between both nations as one rooted in history, shared values, and a common vision for the future.

The President made this known on Wednesday while delivering a speech at a state banquet held in his honour at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

Tinubu described the occasion as historic, noting that he is the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at the centuries-old castle, a symbol of British continuity and institutional evolution.

He emphasised that Nigeria and the UK share more than a colonial past, stressing that both countries are united by a commitment to progress, resilience, and democratic values. According to him, the partnership between the two nations continues to evolve on the basis of mutual respect and shared aspirations.

Reflecting on Britain’s global influence, Tinubu highlighted the enduring legacy of democratic principles such as the rule of law, tracing their roots to historic developments like the Magna Carta. He also acknowledged the contributions of notable British thinkers including Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke, whose ideas helped shape modern governance systems.

The President further noted that Nigeria’s legal, parliamentary, and administrative institutions have been influenced by British traditions, particularly English common law, which continues to underpin the country’s judicial system.

Highlighting people-to-people connections, Tinubu praised the contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, especially in critical sectors such as healthcare. He noted that Nigerian professionals, particularly doctors and nurses, play a vital role within the National Health Service.

He also pointed to the achievements of athletes of Nigerian descent, including Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as symbols of the strong human ties linking both nations.

Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s relationship with the UK is further strengthened through the Commonwealth of Nations, expressing the country’s commitment to contributing meaningfully to the bloc’s continued growth.

On security, the President acknowledged the challenges facing West Africa, particularly terrorism in the Sahel region. He stressed Nigeria’s role in maintaining regional stability and underscored the importance of continued cooperation with the UK in tackling these threats. He also expressed anticipation for talks with Keir Starmer.

Despite these challenges, Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, describing the country as a nation driven by youthful energy, entrepreneurship, and determination to achieve its full potential.

In a personal reflection, the President expressed gratitude to the UK for the support he and other pro-democracy activists received during Nigeria’s years of military rule. He recalled finding refuge in Britain during that period, noting that the solidarity shown remains deeply significant.

Tinubu concluded by thanking the British monarch, members of the Royal Family, and the people of the United Kingdom for their longstanding friendship with Nigeria. He expressed confidence that the relationship between both countries would continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.

He then called for a toast to the enduring partnership and shared future of Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
