NHRC Boss Slams Kebbi Govt Over Arrest, Detention of Journalist, Commends ₦200,000 Compensation
Abuja ( Core Reporters) The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has slammed the Kebbi State Government for the unlawful arrest and detention of journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa for carrying out his constitutional duty to inform the public and hold public officials accountable.
Kangiwa was arrested and detained after exposing the deplorable conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital in Kebbi State. Dr. Ojukwu described the detention as a blatant violation of human rights and freedom of expression by the Kebbi State Government.
While commending the payment of ₦200,000 in compensation to Kangiwa, Dr. Ojukwu urged the government to tender a public apology to fully comply with constitutional requirements. “We commend the payment of ₦200,000 in compensation to Kangiwa for his unlawful detention, which sets a positive precedent for protecting victims of human rights violations,” he said.
The NHRC Boss also welcomed the suspension of the Kebbi State Commissioner for Health, Yunusa Isma’il, over gross negligence and abandonment of duty. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing citizens’ well-being and ensuring healthcare facilities meet basic standards.
Dr. Ojukwu reiterated the significance of press freedom and the role of journalists in holding public officials accountable. The Commission will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring human rights are protected and those responsible for violations are held accountable.
