Nigerians Urged to Embrace Peace, Justice, and Human Rights for a Better Future
Abuja (Core Reporters) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is commemorating the International Day of the Right to Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and the Dignity of Victims today, March 24, 2025. And the Executive Secretary Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) has emphasized the importance of adhering to the truth to promote peace and justice, acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals who speak out against injustices.
Dr. Ojukwu highlighted Nigeria’s recent incidents that underscore the need for robust mechanisms to address grievances and protect citizens’ rights, especially victims of human rights violations.
He urged collective action to push for accountability and transparency, stressing that this is crucial for achieving peace and justice.
Dr. Ojukwu noted that adhering to the truth is essential for promoting peace and justice. While lamenting that Individuals who speak out against injustices often face significant personal risks.
According to him, “Nigeria requires effective mechanisms to address grievances and protect citizens’ rights. Everyone must work together to push for accountability and transparency.”
The NHRC has reported a significant increase in human rights violation complaints, with over 2 million cases recorded in 2024. The Commission remains committed to supporting individuals who have suffered from human rights violations and ensuring that their allegations are thoroughly investigated.
The Human Rights Advocate used the opportunity of the commemoration to call on relevant authorities to work together to create a society where every individual’s rights are respected and protected, reaffirming the Commission’s dedication to protect the dignity of victims, while ensuring accountability for all forms of human rights violations.
