COAS Urges Battalion Commanders To Lead By Example In Tackling Emerging Security Threats
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed Battalion Commanders of the Nigerian Army to lead by example in tackling emerging security threats. He emphasized the importance of demonstrating leadership qualities such as responsibility, accountability, and moral courage to effectively lead troops in battle and peacetime.

He gave the directive on Thursday March 13, 2025, while addressing Battalion Commanders at the First Commanding Officers’ Workshop for 2025, Oluyede urged them to address threats to national security in their areas of responsibility. He also commended the theme of the workshop, “Enhancing Tactical Level Command and Leadership Within a Joint Environment,” as being in line with his Command Philosophy to transform the Nigerian Army.

A statement by the Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said, the COAS also met with troops of the 2 Division, commending them for their sacrifices in combating security challenges. He reassured them that their welfare remains his priority, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve their living and working conditions. These efforts include: Regular provision of uniforms and kits, ensuring troops have the necessary equipment and attire. Improved accommodation, upgrading office and residential facilities. Access to soft loan schemes, providing financial assistance to support troops’ needs. Increased ration cash and Instructors’ allowances and enhancing compensation for troops. And affordable housing- Offering housing options to support troops’ retirement.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding 2 Division; the host formation, Maj Gen Obinna Onubogu had told the participants that the workshop aims at renewing Battalion Commanders’ individual and collective commitment towards the COAS’ desire for a highly motivated and combat ready NA. He pointed out that the workshop will undoubtedly expose them to better approaches to tactical operations, perfecting strategic plans, and improving their leadership skills for operational and administrative efficiency across the theatres of operations.
As part of his welfare initiatives, Oluyede commissioned the 2 Division Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants Station and a Military Police Holding Facility. He also approved the rehabilitation of the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess and the 81 Battalion Officers’ Mess ¹.
