Some communities in Anambra state were threw into mourning on Monday as gunmen suspected to be enforcing sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafran (IPOB) killed three members of the Community Vigilante Services (AVS) and set their vehicle ablaze.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at Ukpo Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
Seven others were injured during the attack. The attackers were also reported to have stormed the Abatete community in Idemili North, resulting in one reported death bringing the total death to four.
However, one man suspected to be the President General of Ukpo town and a vigilante narrowly escaped death. They, however, sustained varying degrees of bullet injuries.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to journalists describe the chaos, with gunmen shouting “No Biafra, No Freedom” while firing sporadically.
They said the incident occurred when the gunmen stormed the Ukpo roundabout, shooting sporadically and targeting a Toyota Sienna minibus carrying the vigilante members.
One of the eyewitnesses recounted, “They came from nowhere, shooting sporadically and chanting ‘no Biafra, no freedom.’ People started running for safety.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, stating that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ukpo Community is investigating the incident.
Recall that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had recently ordered all markets in the state to open and not to obey the sit-at-home order by criminals.
