2027: Speaker Abbas Advocates Continuity for President Tinubu, National Assembly Members
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to address the persistent high turnover of lawmakers in the National Assembly, warning of its negative implications for governance and democratic consolidation.
Speaking on Friday night at the party’s National Convention in Abuja, the Speaker emphasized the need for legislative continuity alongside executive stability, noting that the National Assembly plays a critical oversight role in government programmes and policies.
He described the reforms under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a long-term commitment requiring sustained effort and continuity beyond 2027.
“This is why I say that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must continue this work beyond 2027. Not for sentiment. Not for convenience. But because the work has begun, it must be completed,” the Speaker said.
Speaker Abbas stressed that continuity should not be limited to the executive arm alone but must also extend to the legislature to ensure policy stability and institutional effectiveness.
He noted that frequent turnover among lawmakers has led to loss of experience, weakened institutional memory, and increased public expenditure on repeated training of new members.
“We cannot continue to start every cycle afresh and expect consistent progress. The legislature is not separate from this journey; it is a partner in it,” he stated.
The Speaker therefore urged the party to deliberately support the re-election of committed and high-performing legislators to sustain ongoing reforms and national development efforts.
Describing continuity as “the discipline of progress,” Abbas warned against abrupt policy shifts, stressing the importance of consistency in governance.
He also highlighted the North-West geopolitical zone as a stronghold of the APC, attributing its unity to effective structure and shared direction, while calling for sustained efforts to consolidate and expand the party’s gains nationwide.
“This is not the time for division. This is the time for unity. This is the time for action,” he declared.
Addressing members of the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC), the Speaker urged them to uphold unity within the party through disciplined coordination, inclusive engagement, and strategic leadership.
He acknowledged the challenges of managing a large and growing political party but stressed that cohesion and effective leadership are critical to preventing internal divisions.
“The road ahead will demand discipline and sacrifice, but it will reward consistency, courage, and commitment,” he added.
Speaker Abbas concluded by urging party members to remain steadfast in building a future anchored on stability, unity, and sustained progress.
