Why Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo Should be the Candicdate to Watch in 2027 C’River Guber

Abuja (Core Reporters) As political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections gathers momentum, Cross River State is once again confronted with a familiar question: what kind of leadership does the state need to unlock its enormous potential and restore its place among Nigeria’s leading states?

Where on Earth is President Tinubu?

While several names are already making the rounds, one personality whose credentials continue to attract attention is Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo, the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s governorship candidate. She is seasoned diplomat, former federal legislator, development expert and advocate for good governance, Toyo represents a blend of experience, competence and global exposure that many believe could benefit Cross River State.

Ambassador Toyo first came into national prominence during her tenure as a member of the House of Representatives, where she represented the Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency. She earned a reputation as an articulate lawmaker who consistently championed issues of transparency, accountability, women’s inclusion and sustainable development.

Her appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union further expanded her profile. In that capacity, she represented Nigeria in high-level diplomatic engagements, contributing to discussions on peace, security, economic integration and regional cooperation. The experience exposed her to governance models and development strategies that could prove valuable in addressing Cross River’s challenges.

Beyond public office, Ambassador Toyo has remained active in policy advocacy, democracy promotion and development initiatives. Her work has focused on strengthening institutions, expanding opportunities for women and young people, and promoting inclusive governance.

Cross River State today faces significant economic and developmental challenges. Infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, collapsed of sports sector, declining industrial activities, concerns about internally generated revenue and the need to attract greater investment remain major issues. These realities have heightened public interest in leaders with the capacity to formulate practical policies, build partnerships and inspire confidence among investors and development partners.

Electorate argue that Ambassador Toyo’s international network and development background could position Cross River to benefit from stronger collaborations with regional and global institutions. They also point to her understanding of governance, legislative processes and diplomacy as qualities that could enhance policy implementation and attract development opportunities.

Another factor likely to shape the 2027 political landscape is the growing demand for greater inclusion of women in leadership. Across Africa and beyond, women continue to demonstrate effective leadership in government, business and international organisations. Many believe Cross River has the opportunity to join that progressive movement by giving serious consideration to qualified female candidates.

However, elections are ultimately decided by the electorate. Political experience, popularity, party structure, grassroots mobilisation, campaign strategy and public confidence will all influence the outcome in 2027. Ambassador Toyo, like every other aspirant who may emerge, would have to present a clear vision, practical solutions and earn the mandate of the people through the democratic process.

As the political season gradually unfolds, electorate in Cross River State may find it worthwhile to broaden the conversation beyond personalities and focus on competence, integrity, experience and the ability to deliver measurable development. In that conversation, Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo is likely to remain one of the names deserving careful consideration.

The road to 2027 is still unfolding, but the choices made by political parties and ultimately by the electorate will shape the future of Cross River State for years to come. For many observers, that is why Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo is a figure worth watching.
