Oriire Pupils’ Rescue: NHRC Applauds Security Agencies, Urges Rescue of Others Still in Captivity
By Core Reporters
Abuja (Core Reporters) As Nigerians continue to commend the security agencies for tojuhe rescue of the abducted Oriire pupils and their teachers, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has praised the bravery and professionalism displayed during the operation, while urging the agencies to extend the same commitment to rescuing others still being held captive across the country.
The Commission said the successful rescue must not be treated as an isolated achievement.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Chief Tony Ojukwu,(SAN) strongly urged security agencies to deploy the same urgency, resources, and coordination to secure the freedom of other Nigerians who remain in the custody of their abductors.
“Every life matters. The joy of one family reunited must become the standard for every family still waiting in anguish,” Ojukwu said.
“While we commend this rescue, we are reminded that hundreds of Nigerians are still missing, still suffering, and still hoping.
“The State has a duty to protect the right to life and personal liberty of every citizen under Sections 33 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution.”
The Chief Human Rights Officer noted that the abduction of schoolchildren, travellers, or other community members constitutes a gross violation of human rights and continues to instill fear across the country.
He called on the Federal Government, security agencies, and state governments to intensify intelligence gathering, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and prioritise victim-centred rescue operations.
“Rescuing one is commendable. Rescuing all is the mandate,” Ojukwu stressed. “No Nigerian should be left behind in captivity.”
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the promotion and protection of the rights of everyone living in Nigeria and called on the government to bring insecurity in all its forms to an end.
