CASER Commends NIMASA for Respecting Freedom of Information Act

Abuja (Core Reporters) The Citizens’ Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has commended the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for complying with its request under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, 2011, describing the agency’s response as a strong demonstration of respect for the law and a commitment to transparency.
In a statement signed by the Executive Director & Lead Advocate of CASER, Frank Tietie, NIMASA provided a substantial volume of the information and documents requested, reflecting the agency’s willingness to promote accountability, good governance and constructive engagement with civil society on matters of public interest.
The statement said CASER is currently conducting a detailed review and analysis of the documents received. Given the volume and significance of the information supplied, CASER noted that its assessment would be thorough, objective and comprehensive.
It added that upon concluding the review, it would make its findings public and, where necessary, offer recommendations or take appropriate steps in the public interest.
CASER described the Freedom of Information Act as a critical tool for strengthening democratic governance and enhancing public confidence in government institutions. It therefore urged all public institutions to emulate NIMASA by responding promptly and fully to lawful requests for information.
CASER also appreciated the management of NIMASA for its cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, institutional accountability and the rule of law through constructive engagement.
