Nigeria, Venezuela Mark 61 Years of Diplomatic Ties
The Federal Government of Nigeria has commemorated the 61st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, celebrating more than six decades of friendship, solidarity, and mutually beneficial cooperation.
Diplomatic relations between both countries were formally established on 15 March 1965, laying the foundation for a partnership that has evolved through sustained political dialogue, economic engagement, and cultural exchanges between Africa and Latin America.
Over the years, Nigeria and Venezuela have maintained cordial relations anchored on shared historical experiences, including their struggles for national sovereignty, commitment to South–South cooperation, and a common aspiration for equitable global development. The two countries have continued to demonstrate mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty while strengthening ties through bilateral consultations and collaboration within multilateral platforms.
As major energy-producing nations and members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Nigeria and Venezuela have also built strategic cooperation around energy policy, global oil market stability, and resource-driven development.
Beyond the oil sector, both countries have explored opportunities for collaboration in trade, aviation, education, and cultural diplomacy as part of efforts to broaden the scope of bilateral engagement.
As the two nations mark 61 years of diplomatic relations, the Nigerian government expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to grow stronger. It also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to expanding strategic cooperation with Venezuela in areas that promote sustainable development, energy transition, and global peace.
The government further reiterated its dedication to strengthening the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between both countries for the mutual benefit of their peoples and in the spirit of global partnership.
