Is Nyesom Wike the Most Honest Person Around President Tinubu?

By Raphael Ekpang

There is something increasingly fascinating about the political relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), His Excellency, Nyesom Wike. At a time when political loyalty is often measured by convenience, personal interests and the direction of political winds, Wike has distinguished himself as one of the most outspoken and politically daring members of the Tinubu administration.

But beyond his political boldness, public confrontations and unwavering support for the President, a more interesting question deserves attention: Is Nyesom Wike perhaps the most honest person around President Tinubu?

It is a question that may provoke arguments, particularly among those who consider Wike too controversial, combative or politically unpredictable. However, examining his relationship with Tinubu, his public declarations and his approach to political disagreements presents an interesting dimension of his character.

Wike is not a politician who hides his political preferences. He does not appear uncomfortable declaring where he stands, even when his position attracts criticism from political associates, members of his party or opposition figures.

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, while still a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike openly supported Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He did not disguise his political calculations or pretend to be working for his party’s presidential candidate.

That decision was controversial, but it was also a demonstration of political positioning that Nigerians could see and debate openly.

Unlike politicians who publicly profess loyalty to one political camp while allegedly maintaining relationships with opposing camps behind closed doors, Wike has consistently made his support for Tinubu a matter of public record.

In March 2026, he reiterated his commitment to working for Tinubu’s re-election, insisting that his position had not changed. In September, he again clarified that his support for the President did not mean political parties should abandon their constitutional right to field candidates in other elections.

Whether one agrees with his politics or not, there is an element of consistency in his public position.

Perhaps the most revealing aspect of Wike’s political personality is his frequent invocation of integrity, character and agreements.

In September 2025, during a media interaction in Abuja, the FCT Minister reportedly declared that his integrity and character would not permit him to contest against Tinubu in 2027, particularly because the President who appointed him was seeking re-election.

He went further to express confidence in Tinubu’s electoral prospects.

His position suggests that Wike places considerable importance on political relationships, agreements and loyalty. He has repeatedly maintained that political agreements should not be treated as disposable arrangements that can be abandoned whenever circumstances change.

At a time when Nigerian politicians are frequently accused of changing political positions according to personal convenience, Wike’s insistence that agreements must be respected presents an interesting argument in his favour.

However, honesty in public office must be measured by more than loyalty to an individual. It must also be measured by truthfulness, transparency, accountability, respect for democratic institutions and the willingness to accept criticism.

This is where the debate becomes more complicated.

Wike’s political style has generated considerable controversy. His involvement in the Rivers State political crisis, particularly the confrontation with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, attracted national attention and raised serious questions about political influence, democratic institutions and the boundaries of political disagreements.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025 and the subsequent suspension of the governor and other elected officials intensified the debate.

Critics have questioned Wike’s role in the crisis, while the minister has defended the President’s intervention as necessary to prevent a breakdown of governance.

Similarly, his confrontational approach to public criticism has occasionally attracted condemnation. In April 2026, the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) criticised remarks attributed to him concerning journalist Seun Okinbaloye, describing the language as threatening and inconsistent with democratic values.

These incidents demonstrated why political honesty cannot simply be equated with speaking boldly or maintaining loyalty to a political benefactor.

Nevertheless, Wike’s supporters could argue that his willingness to make controversial statements publicly distinguishes him from politicians who prefer political ambiguity.

His recent challenge concerning infrastructure delivery in the FCT is another example. In July 2026, he reportedly declared that he would resign if his claims about road construction projects in satellite towns were proven false.

He specifically cited 317 kilometres of roads awarded, 221 kilometres completed and 96 kilometres still under construction.

That was a bold public declaration. But the real test of such a commitment is whether the figures can withstand independent verification and whether the minister would honour his promise if they were disproved.

Public office demands evidence, not merely confidence.

There is also another dimension to Wike’s relationship with Tinubu that deserves consideration.

The former governor of River State adoes not appear to be competing for public affection with the President. Rather, he has consistently positioned himself as a political ally who believes Tinubu deserves another opportunity to govern Nigeria.

He has defended the administration against opposition criticism and repeatedly challenged those who argue that the President has performed poorly.

During an October 2026 media parley, Wike insisted that Tinubu had performed well, maintaining that political disagreements should not prevent Nigerians from acknowledging achievements where they exist.

Yet, a responsible minister must also recognise that supporting a President does not mean agreeing with every government policy or dismissing legitimate criticism.

Indeed, the most valuable person around a President is not necessarily the one who sings his praises most loudly. It is the person who can tell him the truth, draw his attention to mistakes and offer honest advice even when such advice is uncomfortable.

This is perhaps the most important standard against which Wike and other members of Tinubu’s inner political circle should be assessed.

Does Wike tell the President the truth when things go wrong? Does he offer candid advice when government policies require reconsideration? Does he distinguish between the President’s political interests and the broader interests of Nigerians?

These are questions that cannot be answered merely by examining public speeches or political declarations. They require evidence of what happens behind the doors of government.

Still, Wike’s public conduct raises an important question about the kind of political associates a President needs.

Nigeria has witnessed administrations surrounded by officials who are more interested in pleasing their appointors than communicating the realities on the ground. Some officials become so invested in protecting their political positions that they struggle to tell their principals the truth.

If Wike’s public insistence on political agreements, loyalty and personal convictions is matched by the same courage in private conversations with the President, he would be an invaluable asset to the Tinubu administration.

But that remains a matter for evidence rather than assumption.

Ultimately, the question of whether Nyesom Wike is the most honest person around President Tinubu should not be settled by his political admirers or critics.

Honesty is not established by volume of speech, political loyalty, public confrontation or the ability to defend a benefactor. It is established by consistency between words and actions, transparency in the management of public resources and the courage to uphold the truth even when it comes at a personal or political cost.

Wike has certainly demonstrated that he is not afraid to make his political positions known. Whether that makes him the most honest person around Tinubu is another question entirely.

Perhaps the more important question is this: Does President Tinubu have enough people around him who will tell him the truth, even when the truth is unpleasant?

For the President, that may be far more valuable than having a cabinet full of loyalists.
