As hardship bite harder in Nigeria, teachers in various secondary schools across the federal capital territory (FCT) Abuja have taking to tasking students to bring money for projects, Core Reporters report.
Investigation shows that Mathematics teachers collect two hundred naira (N200) per a student for the project, While other subjects’ teachers collect one hundred naira (N100) for each student.
A mathematics teacher who has three hundred students in four classes is expected to earn sixty thousand Naira (N60, 000) only for the period of three months.

In one of the junior secondary schools in the Nyanya-Orozo axis, a Mathematics teacher who takes on JSS 3A-H with a population of about five hundred and fifty thousand students is cruising home with N110, 000 to augment his salary for three months.
Our sources from various secondary schools said that what the teachers does is to ask the students to either buy two carbon papers and carry out project or pay N200 for it.
According to one of our sources, “Of course to us students, we prefer to pay N200 than to buy carbon papers of N400 each. And they mostly ask us to buy two or three carbon papers and going through a tedious process of carrying out the project.
“We don’t blame them because things are very hard nowadays. Even our parents are at home paying the N200 than to buy two or three carbon papers,” the source said.
One of the teachers who spoke with us under the condition of anonymity said, “my brother, how man go take survive in this our country, if not using your senses and what you have to get what you want,” the teacher queried.
