Exclusive: Nigerian Senate Under Pressure to Reconsider Electoral Reforms, Calls for Emergency Plenary
By Editor
The Nigerian Senate is facing intense pressure, both domestically and internationally, to reconsider its stance on amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.
This follows concerns that the Senate’s proposed changes, particularly regarding electronic transmission of results and the timeframe for INEC to release the election timetable, may undermine the electoral process.
Sources indicate that the Senate has been urged to reconvene an emergency plenary session to address disputed provisions and adopt mandatory real-time electronic transmission and collation of election results, aligning with the House of Representatives’ position.
Meanwhile, the opposition caucus in the Senate, led by Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, has attempted to downplay the issue, stating that the Senate didn’t reject electronic transmission of results, but failed to clarify the mandatory real-time transmission of results aspect.
The pressure is mounting, with concerns that anti-people laws ahead of the 2027 general elections could worsen the country’s security situation.
We gathered in good authority that the Senate will have no option as they meet on Tuesday, February 10, than to align with the position of the house of representatives.
