In a bid to reduce the margin of error and ensure top notch decisions in the officiating at the AFCON,the referee committee of the Confederation of African Football(CAF) has reportedly made the decision to relieve some referees of their duties at this tournament.
One of such referees is Pierre Ghislain Atcho.
The Gabonese was the central referee for the game between Egypt and Ghana,he was thought to have made poor decisions during the game and has now been told to step aside.
Also, the VAR officials in the Round of 16 game between Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire have been sent home following their actions after the poor challenge from Sadio Manè,which was not reveiwed.
In addition, the VAR officials in the game between Nigeria and Cameroon were also told to step aside, with the reasons not clearly stated.
Another was Daniel Larryea Ayii, the fourth official for Egypt vs DR Congo who failed to inform the referee about a rash challenge on Mostafa Mohamed during this game.
This reported move by CAF shows determination to ensure that it’s tournament’s officiating is quality and there’s no room for error.
So we await the official confirmation from CAF to see what would happen to this referees eventually.
