Abuja (Core Reporters) — The Federal Government has disbursed ₦4.25 billion in outstanding pension and severance benefits to an additional 600 beneficiaries of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited, bringing the total number of beneficiaries paid to 3,300.
The latest payment, covering Batches 010 and 011, amounts to ₦4,251,043,000.19 in gross benefits, marking further progress in the settlement of longstanding entitlements owed to former workers of the national carrier.
According to Efe Ovuakporie, the head of media in the Federal Ministry of Finance, “the first nine batches covered 2,700 beneficiaries, while the latest disbursement brings the cumulative number of beneficiaries paid across 11 batches to 3,300.”
However, the payment is expected to provide financial relief to the beneficiaries, many of whom have waited for years for the settlement of pension and severance entitlements arising from their service with the defunct airline.
Meanwhile, the Ministry’s verification and validation exercise for the next of kin of deceased former Nigeria Airways workers is ongoing.
The exercise is aimed at establishing eligibility, validating claims against approved records and facilitating the settlement of outstanding benefits due to qualified beneficiaries and their families.
The Ministry said it would continue processing verified claims in line with established procedures to ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their entitlements.
The latest disbursement underscores the Federal Government’s efforts to address outstanding obligations inherited from the defunct national carrier and fulfil its commitments to affected former employees and their families.
The payment is also consistent with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which the government says prioritises the resolution of longstanding obligations and the provision of financial relief to affected Nigerians.
