By Raphael Ekpang
Abuja (Core Reporters) -The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has disclosed that it has established a dedicated Situation Room to monitor human rights developments and electoral-related violations throughout the period, starting from the Osun governorship election.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) while addressing the media during a world press briefing held on Thursday, August 13, at the commission’s headquarters Abuja said the Situation Room would serve as part of its efforts to ensure that individuals and institutions are held accountable for violations of constitutional rights, relevant international conventions and the Electoral Act.
Ojukwu noted that the Situation Room would become operational immediately and remain active throughout the electoral process, with monitoring continuing until the conclusion of the elections in February 2027.
He stressed that accountability would remain central to its intervention, particularly in addressing cases involving violations of citizens’ fundamental rights and breaches of applicable electoral laws.
According to him, the Situation Room would enable the commission to monitor developments, receive relevant information and coordinate responses to reported human rights concerns during the elections.
Therefore, Ojukwu urged citizens and other stakeholders who experience or witness violations to report such incidents through the appropriate channels so that they could be documented and acted upon in accordance with the law.
NHRC boss reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights and ensuring that the electoral process is conducted in an environment where the rights, dignity and safety of all Nigerians are respected.
He ended by saying that the commission’s intervention would complement its broader efforts to promote peaceful, credible and inclusive elections and strengthen accountability for violations.
