The Senate Committee Chairman on sports, Senator Joseph Obinna Ogba has supported the call for the sack of the Super Eagles handler, Gernot Rohr, saying that it was the popular decision of Nigerians
Ogba, a former vice president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) while fielding questions from journalists yesterday in Abuja said, he is among the people that are calling for the sack of the German-born tactician, though insisted that Rohr had fulfilled his own side of the contract he entered with the federation when they hired him.
However, Sen. Ogba explained that the NFF cannot wake up in a day and sack the embattled Eagles coach because if they do, Nigeria will risk FIFA’s ban as such the federation is engaging with the coach so that they can partway on mutual ground.
“You may like something and others don’t like, so on the case of Gernot Rohr, I think a lot of persons have called for his sack, so there is need for discussion because there is a way you will sack him if you don’t pay a certain amount of money FIFA will ban Nigeria.
“And when FIFA ban Nigeria a lot of persons will still complain, so let us allow the arrowheads in the federation to do the needful by finding the way out
“Mind you, part of his contract was to qualify us for the nation’s cup which he has done and now the world cup and the qualification is still on,” he said.
Sen. Ogba assured that something is being done about his sack, stressing that most of the NFF board members which he is one of are also calling for his sack; therefore, the leadership of the NFF is working towards that.
Meanwhile, the lacklustre performance of the Super Eagles against the Blue Sharks of Cape Verde on November 16, at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in the final group match of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier which ended 1-1, left the fans wondering whether Rohr can lead Nigeria to her fourth continental title and a ticket to the Qatar World Cup next year.
