TCN, NISO, KEDCO Coordinate Load Diversion for Kano Transmission Line Upgrade
By Our Reporter
Abuja (Core Reporters) – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Kano Region, has held a coordination meeting with the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), project contractors and the Kano State Ministry of Works to finalise plans for a proposed outage and load diversion to facilitate the elongation of Towers 27 and 28 on the Kumbotso–Dan Agundi 132kV Transmission Line.
The meeting, held on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the TCN Regional Conference Room in Kano, was chaired by the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello.
In his opening remarks, Bello expressed confidence in the contractors’ competence but stressed the need for a thorough assessment of all proposed technical connections and switching arrangements before implementation.
He said adequate technical evaluation was essential to ensuring operational safety, protecting equipment and maintaining the reliability of the transmission network throughout the exercise.
The NISO Regional Operations Coordinator, Engr. Kunle Egbedinni, emphasised strict compliance with the Grid Code, particularly the requirement for planned outage applications to be submitted at least 14 days before the proposed date for approval.
He noted that adherence to established procedures was critical to effective system operations and the safe execution of the project.
Also speaking, the Head of Operations and Maintenance at KEDCO, Engr. Sabiu Haruna, proposed diverting the load served by the Dan Agundi 132kV Substation to alternative substations, including Dakata 132kV, Tamburawa 132kV, Rimin Zakara 330kV, Kumbotso 330kV and Wudil 132kV.
The proposed arrangement is expected to accommodate the load diversion within a two-day outage window, subject to technical assessments and the approval of the relevant authorities.
Participants examined the capacity of the network and available alternative supply arrangements to determine the most suitable options for maintaining electricity supply during the planned works.
During the deliberations, stakeholders observed that the Hadejia 132kV Substation could not accommodate the entire 60-megawatt (MW) load earmarked for diversion.
Consequently, they assessed alternative supply options involving the Tamburawa, Rimin Zakara and Dakata substations to determine the most feasible arrangement for managing the affected load.
The meeting also underscored the importance of prioritising personnel safety, protecting equipment and ensuring that all switching operations and technical connections were carried out in line with established operational procedures.
At the end of the meeting, the stakeholders pledged to strengthen inter-agency coordination, comply with applicable regulatory requirements and facilitate the timely execution of the project.
The proposed tower elongation forms part of the infrastructure works requiring coordinated planning among transmission, system operation, distribution and construction stakeholders to ensure safe project delivery and minimise disruptions to electricity
