Senator Ikpea’s Motion on Erosion Receives Senate Overwhelming Support
By Raphael Ekpang
Senator Ikpea Joseph (Edo Central) motion on addresing escalating ecological degradation across Esan land in Edo state on Wednesday received overwhelming support from the Senators at the floor of the Senate.
However, the Senate adopted a motion drawing urgent national attention to the devastating impact of erosion and flooding across several parts of the country, particularly in the South-East, South-South, and North-Central regions.
The motion, highlighted the long-standing environmental challenges faced by communities situated in high-altitude and erosion-prone areas. These regions continue to suffer massive soil loss during heavy rainfall, leading to the destruction of farmlands, homes, and critical infrastructure.
In presenting the motion, the Sen Ikpea emphasized that erosion has remained a persistent problem for decades, noting that while past administrations—such as that of former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole—made commendable efforts to mitigate the crisis, recent interventions have not matched the scale of the challenge.
He expressed concern over the growing impact of erosion on agricultural productivity, warning that the loss of arable land could worsen food insecurity and expose affected populations to economic hardship. Lawmakers also cautioned that such conditions may heighten security risks if not urgently addressed.
Meanwhile, the motion called on the Federal Government and all relevant agencies to intensify efforts toward erosion control and environmental management. It further stressed the need for equitable and transparent utilization of the Ecological Fund to support communities experiencing severe environmental degradation.
As part of its resolutions, the Senate mandated relevant committees to carry out oversight on the disbursement and use of ecological funds, ensuring that resources allocated for environmental intervention are effectively deployed.
Addressing Journalists after the adoption of the motion by the senate, Ikpea expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing the motion as a critical step toward fulfilling campaign promises and amplifying the concerns of affected communities at the national level.
“The ecological challenges we face are not limited to one region; they are national in scope. This motion is a collective call for action to ensure that all Nigerians benefit fairly from resources meant to address such pressing issues,” the lawmaker stated.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to working with the executive arm of government and relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and sustainable solutions to the country’s erosion and flooding challenges.
