Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs Unveils New Work Plan, Reaffirms Commitment to Legislative Diplomacy

Abuja (Core Reporters) The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs Senator Aliyu Wadada has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s legislative engagement with regional and international parliamentary institutions. This followed the adoption of a new work plan by the committee members to guide its activities.
Speaking with journalists after a closed-door meeting of the committee, the chairman disclosed that members had thoroughly reviewed the issues affecting the committee’s operations and agreed on practical steps to address them.
He expressed confidence that the challenges identified would be resolved, assuring stakeholders that the committee would remain active and fully committed to discharging its constitutional responsibilities.
According to him, the committee’s primary mandate is to promote and deepen legislative relations between the National Assembly and parliamentary institutions across the world, including the ECOWAS Parliament, the Pan-African Parliament, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), and other international legislative bodies.
He stated that the committee has adopted a comprehensive work plan that will guide its engagements and programmes, adding that details of its activities will be communicated as they unfold.
As part of its immediate agenda, the committee will undertake a courtesy visit to the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament in Nigeria, marking the beginning of a renewed phase of parliamentary diplomacy and regional legislative cooperation.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with parliamentary institutions across Africa and beyond in support of democratic governance, legislative excellence, and regional integration.
