Proposed National Summit: Senate Rebukes Defence Minister Over Comment
By Raphael Ekpang
Irked by the comments of the Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar on the proposed National Security Summit, the senate on Thursday, May 8, 2025 responded to the Minister and described his outburst unwarranted.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio while addressing the issue at the close of the plenary on Thursday said if the Minister have issue with the senate resolution he should have gotten back to him as the president or other elders of the hallowed chamber, rather than going to the market square as he has done.
Meanwhile, Akpabio noted that at the appropriate time the senate will react to the minister’s comment against the senate resolution on national security summit.
Earlier, the leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele had rebuked the Minister for going to the media to claim the resolution of the Senate was unnecessary, saying that the senate had taken a decision it felt was for the best interest of the country.
However, Bamidele said, “He (the minister) should be prepared to honour the invitation of the Senate to the summit. “
Core Reporters wondered what would have prompted the minister of Defence going to the public to criticise the resolution of the Senate on the national security summit. Does it mean that he knows what the senate does not know, and if so why has he not made the information available to them?
