Sports Women in Nigeria have been urged to show more interest in politics, with a view of ascending to leadership positions, that will make it a whole lot easier for them to have substantial say in sports policies and administration.
The outgone President of the National Association of Women in Sports, Professor Florence Adeyanju stated this in an address she delivered during Saturday’s Elective Congress NAWIS, held in Lokoja, Kogi State.Mrs. Adeyanju who is also celebrated as the founder of NAWIS, told the Congress that the highpoint of her reign was the recognition granted the association by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC)
The Elective Congress culminated in a new set of Executive Committee to be headed by Prof. Mariam Suleiman as President, sworn-in to take charge of affairs of the association for the next four years.The outgone President, had served-up her tenure and opted not to continue in that role, but promised to continue her advocacy for a better deal and welfare, for Nigerian Girl Child and Women in Sports.
In the only position that was contested; Controller of Immigration Service, Nkechi Ezugwu defeat Professor Obi Okonkwo 41-5 votes, to become the new 1st Vice President; whilst Hon. Janet Jatau got elected unopposed as Secretary-General.The Elective Congress with theme, Policy and Politics of women’s sports…, culminated in a Dinner Night, where deserving individuals and corporate bodies, were lauded for championing the promotion of activities of NAWIS, in the media space.
