Abuja (Core Reporters) Over 20 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have expressed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. This move is aimed at addressing the prolonged political turmoil between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.

The CSOs gave their support to Tinubu on Friday, March 21, 2025, while addressing journalists in Abuja.

The CSOs, under the umbrella of the Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness (CCLCA), believe that President Tinubu’s decision is guided by the provisions of the Constitution, particularly Section 305, which allows for the declaration of a state of emergency in situations where the government is unable to maintain order or ensure good governance.

The National Coordinator of the CCLCA, Dr. Nwambu Gabriel, emphasized that the President’s action reflects a sober and constitutional response to the pressing political situation in Rivers State. He also commended President Tinubu for his bold declaration, which is aimed at restoring order and ensuring effective governance.

According to the Mr. Gabriel, “President’s decision is supported by the Constitution, which allows for the declaration of a state of emergency in exceptional circumstances.

“The suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly is seen as a necessary step to facilitate the restoration of order and effective governance.

“The CSOs support the Senate’s resolution to establish a Joint Advisory Committee to oversee the administration of Rivers State during this period.

“The CSOs welcome the Senate’s suggestion to form a committee of eminent Nigerians to reconcile the conflicting parties within the government of Rivers State,” Gabriel said.

The CSOs have urged all stakeholders to contribute to a peaceful and productive resolution of the crisis, emphasizing that collective action and dialogue are essential for restoring hope and trust in governance.
