The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has advocated the promotion and protection in Nigeria inorder to curb insecurity in the country.
Rising from it 2nd council meeting held in Lagos on Wednesday, the Council noted with concern the current spate of insecurity pervading the nooks and crannies of Nigeria regarding unwarranted killings of innocent citizens by armed bandits, kidnapping, youth restiveness, herders invasions and subsequent destruction of farmlands.
This, the Council said if the human rights promotion and protection is enhance in Nigeria it will go a long way in ameliorating the menace.
However, NHRC governing council further recommended that though, the protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of the state, all hands must be on deck to ensure peace and stability in Nigeria.
According to the communique which was signed by the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN) and Dr. Salamatu H. Suleiman the chairperson of the NHRC governing council and made available to Core Reporters reports from the Council Committees on Appointment, Promotion and Discipline, as well as the Finance and General Purposes Committee were presented and deliberated upon, reflecting the Council’s dedication to informed decision-making and efficient functioning of the NHRC.
Complaint of human rights violations which was presented by the Complaint Handling Departments of the Commission were adequately tackled. Complaints ranged from civil and political rights to economic, social and cultural rights, women and children and also vulnerable groups.
The used the occasion to commissioned it new NHRC Office Complex at 17, Balogun Close, Off Kudirat Abiola Road, Alausa Ikeja, Lagos.
Meanwhile, the event attracted dignitaries from all walks of life including the Hon. Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Attorney General of Lagos State, the International Office for Migration, Commissioner of Police Lagos State, AIG Lagos, Commandant Civil Defence, friends and partners of the NHRC including NGOs were also in attendance to witness this epoch making event.
