As Nigeria marked her Democracy day on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Senator representing Ebonyi South Senatorial District at the 10th senate has insisted that Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria having run uninterruptedly in the last 26 years.

He made this known on Thursday, June 12, in a chat with newsmen at the national assembly, Abuja.

According to him, in June 12, 1993 certain Nigerians were resolved to enthroned democracy in the country and which was championed by the then National Electoral Commission (NEC) chairman, late Humphrey Nwosu.

Sen. Ani stated that Democracy is for everybody, noting that a country that runs democracy as its system of government has its citizens in mind.

Earlier, while addressing a special joint session of the National Assembly to mark Democracy Day, on Thursday, President Tinubu announced a posthumous award of OON to the late Humphrey Nwosu and many other awards to the heroes of Nigeria democracy, particularly those whose voices were heard were heard and actions recorded in 1993.

“I am happy with what the president has done today (Thursday), some Nigerians then were resolved to enthroned democracy in Nigeria and late Humphrey Nwosu championed the course as the then chairman of NEC. He was courageous and a man of integrity who confronted the military to make sure the elections were held despite attempts to stop it, by the then military president Ibrahim Babangida led government.

“As you’re aware, Babaginda has confessed that Abiola really won the election and that Nwosu was determined to announce the result if not that he was held by the military.

Meanwhile, June 12 has been institutionalized and democracy has come to stay in Nigeria and I’m happy about that,” he said.
