As the outcry on the decline in Nigerian languages, more especially, the Igbo language of the South East part of the country increases, parents have been urged to always lay the foundation on which their children would appreciate the speaking of their mother tongue.
The Chairman, Ikwo Progressive Union, Abuja, Prince Leonard Emenike Nwofor made the call in an interview with journalists during the Ebonyi State Day celebration in Abuja, Saturday, at the Old Parade Ground.
Ebonyi State sons and daughters had gathered, amongst other things to celebrate in memorial to the creation of the State on October 1, 1996.
Nwofor revealed that he protested the day he learnt that her daughter wrote Hausa language in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) instead of Igbo language which was her mother tongue.
He added that parents should live to their responsibility to speak the Igbo language to their children at home.
He opined that those who were responsible to conduct interviews for employment in South East states should do so in Igbo language, pointing to the fact that Eze John Nwaenyi did such by not employing those who could not speak the dialect in Ebonyi State.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director, Ark of God Transport, Mr Ikechukwu Nwabuaju appreciated Ebonyi State indigenes for organizing the event saying that it was necessary for the children to know their origin.
He posited that Ndigbo in Abuja should rally behind the President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Abuja, Ifeanyichukwu Obasi Nwaeze to enable him take the people to a greater height.
