Nigeria Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday led a solemn memorial parade at the Force Headquarters in Abuja in honour of 17 officers of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) who lost their lives during a terrorist attack in Yobe State.
The fallen officers were killed in the early hours of May 8, 2026, during an attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
Speaking during the memorial ceremony held on Tuesday, May 19, the IGP described the deceased officers as gallant heroes who paid the supreme price in defence of Nigeria, its citizens, and national security.
“These brave men died while standing in defence of Nigeria, her people, and our collective peace and security. Their sacrifice represents the highest form of patriotism and duty,” he said.
The police chief noted that the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the PMF, continues to maintain hundreds of personnel across the North-East in joint operations with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
According to him, officers daily risk their lives under difficult conditions to ensure the safety and peace of Nigerians.
“We want every Nigerian to feel, and to know in their hearts, that there are men and women in uniform who wake up every morning with one purpose: to serve, to protect, and if called upon, to give everything,” the IGP stated.
He further stressed that behind every fallen officer is a grieving family, a lost future, and a nation indebted to their sacrifice.
“Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and we solemnly pledge that their deaths will not be in vain. The Nigeria Police Force will not waver. We will continue to stand firm and give our very best in service to this great nation,” he added.
The IGP also extended condolences to the families of the slain officers, assuring them of the Force’s support during the difficult period.
The memorial parade drew senior police officers, family members of the deceased, and other security stakeholders who gathered to honour the fallen personnel for their courage and service to the nation.
