Ibadan Summit: Mark Calls for United Opposition to Rescue Nigeria From Collapsing

By Kevin Stella Kita

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Distinguished Senator David Mark, has issued a strong call for unity among opposition parties, declaring that Nigeria is facing a critical moment that demands urgent and collective action to safeguard its future.

Speaking at the National Opposition Summit held in Ibadan on Friday, Senator Mark described the gathering as a “patriotic response to a nation in distress,” urging political leaders to rise above personal ambition and partisan interests in order to confront the country’s deepening crises.

He painted a grim picture of the nation’s security situation, noting that insecurity has become a defining feature of daily life across Nigeria. Citing alarming figures, Mark stated that over 12,000 conflict-related deaths were recorded in 2025 alone, with at least 15 Nigerians killed and 19 abducted daily.

“Nigeria is now a nation in mourning—families shattered, communities destroyed, and hope steadily eroded,” he said.

The former Senate President accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing in its primary responsibility to protect citizens, alleging that the government appears more focused on political survival than addressing the worsening insecurity and economic hardship.

Mark also warned of what he described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy, alleging systematic efforts to weaken opposition parties and undermine democratic institutions.

“The move towards a one-party state is real and must be resisted. Democracy thrives on choice, and that choice must be protected,” he stressed.

He called on opposition leaders to unite, emphasizing that no single party can challenge what he described as an entrenched system determined to retain power at all costs.

“This is not a time for division. It is a time for sacrifice, trust, and collective resolve to rebuild our nation,” he added.

On the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, Mark expressed concern over declining public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning that the integrity of future elections could be at risk if urgent reforms are not undertaken.

Senator Mark urged opposition leaders to seize the moment and make history by forming a united front capable of restoring democratic values, ensuring security, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

“Let this be the moment we chose unity over division, country over self, and courage over complacency,” he said.

Imo: Troops Smash IPOB/ESN Enclave, Recover Suspected Remains of Slain Personnel

The Nigerian Army has recorded a major operational breakthrough in its sustained efforts to rid the South-East of criminal elements, as troops of 82 Division, in conjunction with sister services and other security agencies, dismantled a notorious camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Imo State.

The operation, conducted on April 24, 2026, along the Ubaha-Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area, followed credible intelligence and formed part of a deliberate clearance and search mission targeting IPOB/ESN hideouts in the region. It also aimed to locate the remains of two Nigerian Army personnel—Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew—who were abducted and murdered by IPOB/ESN terrorists in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

During the operation, troops advancing on the suspected hideout came under heavy attack from armed militants. Demonstrating resilience and superior firepower, they decisively engaged the attackers, repelled multiple ambushes, and forced the criminals to flee in disarray. The encounter underscored the group’s continued threat to both security personnel and innocent civilians.

Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted a thorough search of the area and made a grim but significant discovery—shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were carefully excavated, and suspected human remains were recovered.

The recovered remains have been secured for detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities. Efforts are also ongoing to liaise with the families of the fallen personnel to ensure proper identification and facilitate dignified burial arrangements in honour of their sacrifice.

This operation underscores the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to securing justice for fallen heroes and highlights the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN criminal networks across the South-East. The discovery of shallow graves within the camp further exposes the group’s brutality and disregard for human life.

The Nigerian Army reassures the public that ongoing operations will continue until all criminal elements are neutralised and lasting peace is restored in the region. Law-abiding citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information.

The Nigerian Army remains resolute, professional, and committed to defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria.
