Force PRO Unveils Stronger Complaint Response Unit, Seeks Deeper Media Engagement

Abuja (Core Reporters)- The Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to strengthen its Complaint Response Unit (CRU), the Force’s frontline digital platform for receiving, tracking and resolving complaints against police personnel, while also seeking deeper collaboration with the media to enhance public trust and accountability.

The newly appointed Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem, highlighted the renewed focus on the CRU during a courtesy visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, on Friday. He also called for stronger media partnership to improve public awareness and balanced reporting of ongoing police reforms.
Describing the visit as part of his familiarization tour, CSP Edem said the CRU remains one of the Nigeria Police Force’s key internal accountability mechanisms, operating round the clock to receive and process complaints bordering on professional misconduct, extortion, harassment and human rights violations by police officers across the country.
He explained that recent improvements to the unit are aimed at reducing response times, enhancing complaint tracking and increasing transparency in the resolution of cases, in line with the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police.
As part of efforts to strengthen police-media relations, the Force PRO also announced plans to host a media parley with journalists covering Zone 7, saying the initiative would promote greater engagement and ensure more accurate reporting of police activities and reforms.

“Journalists are part of the police family,” CSP Edem said, emphasizing that responsible and informed reporting would help strengthen public confidence while encouraging institutional accountability.
Responding, the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed the reforms to the Complaint Response Unit and commended CSP Edem for his open and collaborative approach.
She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to working closely with the Nigeria Police Force, pledging that journalists would continue to amplify citizens’ complaints and provide sustained coverage of developments within the CRU to ensure transparency and accountability.
The enhanced Complaint Response Unit is expected to improve public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force by providing citizens with a more efficient, transparent and accessible platform for reporting misconduct, while reinforcing the media’s role in promoting accountability and supporting ongoing police reforms.
