The leadership of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has explained to the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation why it embarked on demolition of houses at the Runview Estate in Ajao Estate, Lagos for the safety of the occupants and on security reason.
Managing Director of FAAN Captain Rabiu Yadudu explained this on Wednesday at the public hearing organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation.
He said, “the reason we are demolishing the houses was based on security and safety reasons alone. The total illegal houses on our land in Lagos were 254 and because of the present condition in the country we decided to demolished only 34 houses and spared 220 after due diligence was observed.
“We carried out variation on the remaining 220 houses, therefore, when the news arising for further demolition we will notify them at the appropriate time because we are determined to keep to the standard required of Airports the world over,” he said
Earlier on, the Committee Chairman, Honourable Nnolim Nnaji had demanded to know why FAAN was demolition houses in Lagos airport and also the sorry state of air-condition and elevators in Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja.
However, after the MD of FAAN presentation, the Committee Chairman and members were satisfied with his position but Hon. Nnaji insisted that whenever such exercises are to be carried out again, the National Assembly should be notify on time because those affected have representatives here
Meanwhile, the MD insisted that work was ongoing to fix all the fixable at the Abuja Airport terminal among others in the country.
