Enugu City Set to Host World-Class Athletes at Inaugural Marathon
Enugu (Core Reporters) Top international athletes are gearing up to participate in the Enugu City Marathon, scheduled to take place on May 3, 2025. This maiden edition has generated significant buzz, both locally and internationally, solidifying Nigeria’s position as a hub for road races in Africa and globally.
The event is expected to showcase Enugu State’s stunning landscape and tourist attractions, highlighting Governor Peter Mbah’s efforts to transform the state into a modern hub. Commissioner for Sports Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu expressed enthusiasm about welcoming international athletes, praising Governor Mbah’s understanding of sports’ power in Nigerian history.
Meanwhile, Key Highlights of the Enugu City Marathon include; Elite Athlete Participation-Top international runners will compete, with a total prize purse of $256,000.
Route and Landmarks: The carefully curated route will feature iconic landmarks like Coal Camp Road, Independence Avenue, and Ebe Ano Tunnel Road ².
The event will also include fitness expos, workshops, and charity initiatives to foster community engagement. While the organizers, Nilayo Sports Management Company and the state government are working to ensure the event meets international standards.
The Enugu state Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, said the state cannot wait to welcome all the different runners and the interest from the international athletes have very impressive.
” His excellency, Governor Peter Mbah understands clearly the power of Sports and where Enugu is in the history of Nigerian Sports, and the Governor is very determined to return the state to its glory days of Sporting excellence. And this is one of the ways”.
