Leaders of the Indigenous Ethnic Youth of Nigeria have demanded justice for all the Nigerian youths maimed and killed during the #EndSARS protests which occurred last year.
In a heavily worded statement signed by its National Chairman, Comrade Nensok Gonet, the youth group said they will not forget in a hurry the genocide of Nigerian youths during the protest.
According to the statement, “A year gone with heavy hearts that our beloved brothers and sisters were gruesomely murdered at Lekki tollgate and other parts of the country during the #EndSARS protest yet no justice for their families. We won’t forget nor forgive until justice is served for victims.
“These were patriotic Nigerians who were concerned about the police brutality in their country and came out to express their displeasure over government’s actions which were seen as anti-youths, but only for them to be murdered in cold blood holding Nigeria’s national flag. What a despicable situation”.
The group accused the Nigerian government of killing peaceful protesters, therefore called for justice.
“This action of our government was unfortunate and unacceptable. The world over, people are allowed to demonstrate peacefully and aired their grievances without molestation but not in the case of Nigeria.
“We called on the international community to call the Nigerian government to order, to grant the victims of #EndSARS justice. The Nigerian government must own up to this crime, and punish the officers involved in the killings and compensate all the families of the deceased heroes and heroines. We shall continue to remind the government of Nigeria on this until justice is served”, the statement said.
I will be recalled that on October 3, 2020, operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) allegedly shot a young man at Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, injuring him. This incident was filmed and went viral, sparking an outcry on social media against SARS using the hashtag #EndSARS. The protest however ended on October 20, 2021, with so many casualties recorded on the side of the youths, while properties worth billions of naira were also destroyed across the country.
