Edo Central Erosion Crisis: Senator Ikpea Assures Constituents of Stronger Federal Intervention
By Raphael Ekpang
Senator Joseph Ikpea, representing Edo Central Senatorial District, has renewed calls for urgent federal action to address the worsening erosion and ecological challenges affecting communities across the district.
Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, the lawmaker acknowledged that similar motions on erosion control had been raised in the past but admitted that implementation had fallen short of expectations. He, however, assured constituents that renewed and more strategic engagement with relevant federal agencies is underway to ensure measurable and lasting impact.
According to him, “the erosion crisis in parts of Edo Central has continued to threaten homes, farmlands, roads, and public infrastructure, posing both environmental and economic risks to affected communities.
“ Beyond debates and motions on the floor of the National Assembly, sustained follow-up and inter-agency coordination are critical to delivering tangible results.” he said.
Senatot Ikpea expressed optimism that stronger collaboration between lawmakers and federal institutions responsible for ecological intervention would lead to practical solutions. While noting that ecological disasters require not just emergency responses but structured, long-term remediation plans backed by adequate funding and monitoring.
He emphasized that addressing erosion in Edo Central is not merely a constituency issue but part of a broader national environmental management challenge that demands coordinated legislative oversight and executive action.
He reassured residents that he remains committed to pushing for effective implementation of ecological funds and intervention programmes targeted at vulnerable communities. He urged affected residents to remain patient while ongoing engagements with federal authorities progress.
The lawmaker maintained that, “with sustained advocacy, improved oversight, and institutional cooperation, Edo Central can achieve durable solutions that will protect lives, preserve infrastructure, and secure livelihoods across the district.”
Politics and Legislative Responsibilities
With elections approaching, Senator Ikpea dismissed concerns that political activities would distract lawmakers from governance. He maintained that legislative duties remain paramount and that the National Assembly can reconvene at any time to address urgent national matters.
Security Situation in Nigeria:
The lawmaker emphasized that Nigeria’s security situation requires both domestic reforms and responsible global partnerships. He commended the Federal Government for strengthening ties with the United States in tackling insecurity, noting that even global powers rely on alliances during crises.
Referencing the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Senator Ikpea pointed out that international conflicts demonstrate the importance of strategic support systems, adding that Nigeria should not hesitate to seek necessary assistance in confronting unconventional threats.
He clarified that extremist elements operating under religious identities do not represent the peaceful majority of Nigerian Muslims, stressing that religion should not be used to justify violence or criminality.
Electoral Act Amendment
On the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act amendment, Senator Ikpea defended the decision to allow both electronic transmission and manual backup of election results. According to him, while electronic systems enhance transparency, they are not immune to technical failures or cyber threats.
He explained that the dual approach ensures inclusivity for areas with poor network coverage and provides safeguards in case of system disruptions. “No credible system operates without a backup,” he stated, describing the Senate’s decision as practical and in Nigeria’s best interest.
Support for State Police
On constitutional reforms, the lawmaker reiterated his support for state police, arguing that localized security structures would enhance intelligence gathering, community protection, and rapid response to threats.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of ongoing reforms, emphasizing that rebuilding institutions and stabilizing the economy require time, unity, and sustained commitment.
