Defence Headquarters Describes NAF ATR-42 Incident as Painful Loss Armed Forces, Nation

…Orders investigation

By Our Reporter

Abuja (Core Reporters) — The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, describing the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation.

The aircraft was said to have been on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when the accident occurred. Military personnel and some members of their families were reportedly on board.

In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Headquarters expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of all those involved in the crash, as well as the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces community.

The Defence Headquarters said the accident had been received with deep shock, stressing that the sacrifice and courage of military personnel serving to protect the country would not be forgotten.

It further disclosed that, in compliance with a directive from the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the crash.

Meanwhile, search-and-rescue operations by the Nigerian Air Force, in collaboration with sister Services and relevant emergency agencies, were continuing at the crash site.

The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remained committed to its constitutional responsibility of securing the nation despite the incident.

It also appealed to members of the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the affected families while official procedures and investigations continue.

“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may God grant their families the strength to bear this profound loss,” the statement added.
